A detailed study of the fish revealed a bizarre sound apparatus, the analogues of which science does not know. A special muscle through a special rib pushes with great force what has been called ‘drum cartilage’. It hits the swim bladder and creates an acoustic impulse. The muscle can contract unilaterally or bilaterally alternately, so that the impulses overlap, increasing the volume of the sound.
