Voracious giant catfish rampage across the western U.S.

Although these catfish were originally present in Mississippi and Gulf waters, since the 1950s they have spread to the west coast of the United States and have infested rivers that flow into the Atlantic.

In 2023, the Maryland Administration expressed concern about the increasing population of invasive fish species, including flathead catfish, and their impact on Chesapeake Bay fisheries.
