Thailand’s water bodies are being overrun by aquarium catfish

This species is not indigenous to the country. Aquarists started releasing its representatives into water bodies and the fish began to reproduce actively. The species is recognised as invasive, as it causes damage to local ecological systems.

Not long ago, the owner of a fish farm in Prachinburi Province posted a photo of the species in the ponds. Prachinburi posted a video on social media in which he drains a pond to catch fish for sale, only to find it overrun by ‘sucker fish’. The video has caused widespread public outcry.
