Bottlenose catfish are native to the South American continent and live mainly in Brazil. They have a large head and with their large lips they suck on various surfaces. At first, they were shipped to Thailand as an ornamental species. The fish were purchased to fight algae and food debris in aquariums. But, since the weight of catfish often reaches several kilograms, aquarists, believing that they are cramped in such a limited space, release them into reservoirs.

This species is able to adapt to life in different conditions, even in dirty rivers. They eat both plant and animal food, are prolific, lay eggs in almost any environment. The aggressive temperament and omnivorous nature of catfishes have led to a decrease in the population of local fish species.
